Epson adopts Colour Light Output to measure Projector Colour Brightness

2 February, 2009 – Epson, the global leader in the projector market , will use Colour Light Output (CLO) to indicate the brightness of its projectors’ colour output. Colour Light Output accurately defines the colour performance of any projector in contrast to conventional brightness or light output specifications, which only measure the performance of a projector’s white light output.

Developed by Lumita (www.lumita.com) in the US in December 2007 using the same approach as white light output (brightness) measurement, Colour Light Output provides a simple, accurate and easy-to-understand way to evaluate a projector’s colour performance.

“With the increasing amount of high definition content available, picture quality and, in particular, colour performance is becoming an increasingly important factor in the purchase decision.” said Graeme Davidson, Senior Product Manager at Epson UK. “Until now, the customer has not been able to gauge or compare colour performance. Colour Light Output data will enable consumers to make a comparison of colour performance between models and make a more informed buying decision.”

Epson will quote both white light brightness and Colour Light Output in projector specifications to give users a more accurate picture of their projector’s performance.

How to measure Colour Light Output

Three RGB colour patterns are divided into nine separate areas. The luminance of the nine areas is then measured for each pattern, and an average value taken for each of the patterns. Finally, the Colour Light Output is calculated by adding the average values of the three patterns.
